Let’s be honest. Nobody gets excited about floor tiles. Until they walk into a showroom with an 80×160 floor and stop for a second. (We’ve seen it happen more times than we can count.)
That small pause is why 80×160 cm vitrified tiles have become one of the most asked-for sizes in India. At SakarMarbo, we’ve been making tiles since 1999, and we can tell you one thing for sure. The demand for big formats isn’t slowing down. It’s increasing.
So here’s what we usually explain to customers over a cup of chai, written down in one place.
First, what size are we talking about?
800 mm x 1600 mm.
In feet, that’s about 2.6 x 5.2. One tile covers around 13.8 sq ft (more than seven 60×30 tiles put together). When the boxes reach the site, people usually say the same thing. “Too big?” (Yes. And that’s exactly the point.)
Most 80×160 cm tiles in the market are close to 9 mm thick, in glossy, matt, and a few textured finishes. Some call them slab tiles; others say large format vitrified tiles. Same tile, different name.
Why is everyone asking for it?
Short answer? Fewer lines.
Long answer: small tiles leave a whole grid of grout joints across the floor. On day one it looks fine. Give it a year (and a couple of monsoons) and those lines turn dull, sometimes almost black. With 800×1600 tiles, there are far fewer joints to worry about.
The design looks better too. On a big tile, marble veins run long, the way they do in real stone. On a small tile, the pattern breaks every two feet, and your eye catches it.
Rooms feel bigger.
Cleaning gets easier. In a café or clothing store where the floor is mopped two or three times a day, less grout simply means less scrubbing.
And then there are walls.
Because one tile is 1.6 meters tall, a single piece behind a TV unit or on a bathroom wall covers most of the height. That’s why so many architects now use them for reception backdrops and feature walls. These sell fast in the international markets. If you are a reseller, the stock will move faster.
Where it works (and where it doesn’t)
Big living rooms. Hotel lobbies. Restaurants. Showrooms. Office receptions. Feature walls in kitchens and bathrooms. That is where these tiles really shine.
We will be honest with you. For a washroom floor full of corners, slopes, and cuts, choose a smaller size. There will be more wastage. At all these places, this size doesn’t work.
Before you place the order
Big tiles look great. Big tiles are also less forgiving. If the base underneath is uneven, a big tile will show it. So these tiles demand an installer who has laid tiles before and has experience. A good installer will not mind the question. Get the floor properly leveled. Use tile adhesive, not just plain cement mortar. Use levelling clips. Levelling clips costs little and stops lippage. Lippage is that height difference you feel underfoot between two tiles.
Buy the quantity of tiles from one batch. Shades can shift slightly between batches, and on a floor this shows.
Choose the finish of tiles by usage not by looks. Glossy tiles are lovely in a living room. In a shop with footfall, matt tiles hide scratches much better.
Always ask for the spec sheet of tiles. A good tile lies end to end. No rocking, at the corners.
A bit about SakarMarbo
SakarMarbo by Sakar Granito (India) Pvt. Ltd., a vitrified tiles manufacturer in India has more than 25 years experience in the business.
Apart from 80×160 slabs, our range covers PGVT, GVT, double charge, soluble salt nano, digital glazed tiles (matt and glossy), wall tiles and parking tiles.
We’re ISO and CE certified, and our tiles go to the UAE (mostly Dubai and Sharjah), the UK, the USA, Saudi Arabia, and several African countries. In India, we have a dealer network, so you can see the tile in person before buying. (Our Photos will always do the justice.)
On pricing, we keep it fair. Simple as that. We’d rather keep a customer for years than make a quick extra rupee on one order.
